Basketball Training and the Complete Basketball Player

In the days of Superstars and Wannabe's, it is a rare thing to find young men or women who exhibit most of the characteristics that is indicative of the "complete player".

Being a complete player doesn't always mean having the highest score, the best position, or best moves. As a matter of fact, most of today's high school, college, and professional basketball players we consider to be the best players do not fit the mold of what this means. The great majority of those who are considered to be today's best players are, for the most part, one dimensional....they can score! Sure, some of them will make a good pass every now and then, and they might even try to rebound and play "D" on occasion. But for the most part they are not well rounded in their game except to score and be super athletic.

The complete player, on the other hand(and there have been a few: Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, John Stockton to name a few),is not just a prolific scorer or exceptional athlete. Although both of these traits are necessary for the complete player, they are by no means the only qualities required to be a complete player.

The complete player must not just be one or two dimensional. The complete player MUST be multi-dimensional. What I mean by this is that he/she will not just be the best at one or two things, but rather he/she will be really, really good at all of the things that make the players, their teams, and game situations work most effectively.

For example, a point guard can be the most outstanding ball-handler and scorer on a team or in a league. But if that point guard does not have leadership abilities, the respect of his/her team, or is selfish in their goals and intentions, then he/she will never be able to bring to the table what the team needs to win the big one against a equally talented,well-rounded team.

And on the other side of the court, you might be the hardest to guard player in your conference, but if you stink on the defensive end, for whatever reason, then your offensive prowess isn't worth a hill of beans.

For a great example of what it is I am referring to, a person has to look no further than the NCAA Men's College NationalChampionship Runners-Up for the last two years in a row..the Butler Bulldogs. This is a team, that by all expert opinionsand standards should never have been in a championship game at that level to begin with, let alone TWO YEARS IN A ROW! But they were. Why? They weren't the most athletic. They certainly weren't the biggest, strongest, or fastest. And they didn't have any superstars on their team. So what was it that got them where they are, and where they have been? Experience, teamwork, and a whole group of very "Well-Rounded" players. Because of this they were able to take down teams with better athletes, more powerful big men, and several star laden teams that the experts said they didn't have a chance against. And they proved them wrong, not just one year, but two in a row.

By following the link below you can see a list of what we at simply-youth-basketball believe to be the most important, and most needed traits of the complete Offensive and Defensive basketball player. Below these we have also made a list of traits that are common to both complete Offensive and Defensive Players.

Characteristics of the Complete Offensive and Defensive Basketball Player

To possess several of these makes you a relatively complete, and well-rounded basketball player. To possess most or all of these not only makes you a valuable asset to any team, it makes you a very rare and exceptional player in today's game of basketball.
