Not every group of kids you will have will be able to run even the most basic of set offensive patterns and do them successfully, especially at the lower youth levels. And oftentimes it is near impossible with even some middle school level and up teams to run an offense with many specific rotations and patterns.

I remember in high school, though I was part of a very successful team which ran the old Indiana motion offense, we had several set plays and quick-hitters we kept tucked away for those times where we came upon a talented and athletic defensive team.
There are those in the coaching world who will say that you should never use set plays, and there are some who would argue that they should only be used in dire circumstances because kids do not learn to play properly, or learn to adjust to just playing the game. While I understand this reasoning, I don't think it is always true.
Some kids, and some teams, at many different levels just cannot, or do not have the talent, to improvise or run a complicated offensive pattern. This is why I have added this information to our site, so that you might be able to get ideas in the case that you need a set play for youth basketball should you find yourself in this situation...and set plays are great for teaching those basic fundamental principles that all players need to learn the game of basketball...so they are relevant and they can be greatly advantageous.
