PASSING OVERVIEW: Good passing is just another integral part of the game of basketball. There is probably less emphasis put on passing than any other part of the game. But that does not make it any less significant. I have seen, as well as experienced first hand, good teams who were superior in talent and athleticism find themselves on the losing end of the game because their opponent was fundamentally better at passing, and used it to their advantage. It becomes very hard to score when you spend most time on defense. The basic principles of passing are similar to that of many other aspects of basketball.
GRIPPING BALL: The first thing a player needs to understand is that they must keep a firm grip on the ball. WITH BOTH HANDS! So many times a ball will get knocked away or taken because a player has made the mistake of getting complacent.
PROTECTING BALL: A player must also have the ball held and their body positioned in a way that protects the ball from defender.
ACCURACY and QUICKNESS: Next, their pass must be sharp and accurate. Lazy passes just will not do! The pass should be hard enough to get the ball to where it needs to be, yet without being out of control or too difficult for intended recipient to catch.
USING PIVOT FOOT: A player may be able to make the occasional overhead pass, or a pass to the side while stationary. But it may be necessary for passer to use pivot for to turn, move, or step around a defender in order to make the pass.
