This is a fun game that will make your players want to get aggressive going for rebounds, and at the same time help themget a feel for seeing how the ball comes off on a missed shot. In reality, this is a hustle drill more than it is a game.We do this drill in a tournament format, with all the players competing against each other two at a time, until there areonly two left with one being crowned "King of the Glass".
You will need to take the total number of your players and write numbers on pieces of paper based upon that number. For example,if you have 12 kids on your team you will write out the numbers 1-12 on pieces of paper.
Put these numbers in a hat, box, or whatever you have on hand, and let each kid draw out a number.
Next, you will use these numbers to seed the kids against one another, with the highest seed #1 facing the lowest seed, and so on, just like in a tournament.
Once you have the kids paired up, place the first two kids side by side at the center of the free-throw line. Don't forget to stress the importance of looking to box out the other player to them.
When they are set and ready, you should shoot the ball making every attempt to miss. As soon as the shot is released players should move in looking to determine where the ball is going to come off, and fighting to get position for the rebound.
Note: Depending on which side the ball comes off at, one player will normally have a little better position than the otherby maybe a foot or two. This shouldn't matter. If player hustles it should still be a good contest.
Do this with each two players until you have a winner from each pair, then pair them up again based on their seed. And repeat until only two or three are left.
More than likely, because of the way numbers work, you will not be able to make it down to two players to finish. What you will more than likely have to do is pit the last three or four against one each other all together, or in split again into groups of two and three, and play these out to the final two and determining a King.
If you have an understanding of how tournaments are seeded you can always fix this by giving byes to the top seeds, which will allow you to get to the final two with any adjusting.
